Student Trustee Candidate Applications Open
The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) is looking for two students to serve as its 2026-27 Student Trustees. Learn more about how to Become a Student Trustee.
What is a Student Trustee?
Student Trustees represent approximately 64,000 WRDSB students at the Board table and also sit on various committees. They ensure student voice and perspective are considered in all important decisions.
The current Student Trustee term ends on July 31, 2026. Students must elect the next students to take on these roles.
Who Can Apply?
All applications must be received before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026.
- A student trustee must be enrolled as a full-time student (taking at least 3.0 credits per semester).
- When starting the role, you must be a Grade 11 or 12 student in a WRDSB high school.
- Please note: Students in Grades 10, 11, and 12 can apply, but Grade 10 students must be entering Grade 11 the year they take on the role.
- Applicants must have secured parent, family or caregiver permission if they are under 18 years of age.
- A student would also be eligible as an exceptional pupil in a special education program for whom the Board has reduced the length of the instructional program on each school day, under subsection 3 (3) of Regulation 298 of the Revised Regulations of Ontario, 1990 (Operation of Schools – General) made under the Act, so long as the pupil would be a full-time pupil if the program had not been reduced. O. Reg. 42/11, s. 1.

What Do I Need to Apply?
Each student must provide a completed application that includes the following:
- Watch the MANDATORY pre-election seminar that was shared to your Student Gmail account on December 15, 2025.
- Review the Become a Student Trustee webpage and Policy 3006 – Student Trustees and Student Representation Within the Board.
- Review the Student Trustee Election Candidate Expectations.
- Completed Student Trustee Election Student Participation Consent Form, if the candidate is under the age of 18.
- Completed IS-19L Student Media Release Consent Form submitted with your application.
- Completed Acknowledgment of Student Trustee Election consent form signed by a Principal or Vice-Principal.
- Candidate Biography (250-word limit)
- Your biography should include your name, school and grade, and any experience relevant to the role of student trustee.
- Candidate Video and Script (3-minute limit)
- Submit a video explaining why you are running to become a Student Trustee and what you want to work toward should you be elected.
- Your video must be completed in a single take, with no additional editing (i.e. text or animation)
- You must also include a script of what is said in the video to assist with the creation of subtitles for your video (As either a Google Doc or Word Document)
Please note: a Candidate Review Panel will review submissions for completeness and create a final list of candidates.
Ridings, Campaigns and Elections
North and South Ridings
WRDSB Secondary Schools have been divided into two geographical ridings: North and South. Each will elect one Student Trustee candidate from their riding.

Campaign and Elections
Student Trustee Elections campaign period will occur in early February. During this period, campaign materials from each candidate will be made available to the student electorate at each school within their riding through the WRDSB website.
The election period will take place in late February. Each school will choose the days to use for their respective elections. The specific dates for the campaign and election period will be shared in the coming weeks.
