To our school community,

As you may be aware, our school has been in the news lately as conversations are happening in our community, and across the country, regarding the history of Sir John A Macdonald and the impact of having buildings named after him, specifically schools.

We want you to know that we hear the concerns expressed, are listening and support further conversations in the future.

We acknowledge that there are concerns within the community regarding the name of Sir John A Macdonald Secondary School, and many of our staff and trustees share these concerns,” says Jayne Herring, chair of the board of trustees for the Waterloo Region District School Board. “The decision to rename one of our schools must not happen in isolation at the board table, it requires listening to our community. I anticipate this will come to trustees at a meeting of the board in the near future. When that happens, if directed by trustees, we will follow Board Policy 4020 – Naming and Renaming of Board Facilities and establish a committee.”

We are committed to engaging our community in future discussions and will keep you updated. Until then, we wish each and every one of you a safe and relaxing summer.
