To help you prepare for your first year of high school at LHSS, check out this useful general information about your daily and yearly schedule and more!
A big change from grade 8 to high school is your daily schedule. Each class/period is 75 minutes in length and you have the same 4 classes each day. All WRDSB high schools run on an alternating week 1/week 2 schedule (see below). On week 1, your classes run PERIOD C and D after lunch. On week 2, those classes flip and you’ll attend PERIOD D, followed by period C.
This rotating afternoon schedule is intended to support students who participate in WCSSAA sports. As many teams are required to leave early on game days, this schedule prevents students from missing the same class at the end of the day throughout that particular season.

We share a common lunch block each day (1 hour) for all students. This gives students the opportunity to join clubs and groups – many of these run during the break!
Another big change from grade 8 – your school year is divided into 2 semesters (see below). In each semester, you’ll have 4 courses that run for approximately 5 months. After semester 1 ends mid-year, you’ll switch to a new schedule with 4 new classes. There is also an exam week scheduled at the end of each semester (4-5 days) for students to complete course-end exams/summative activities.
Lastly – we recognize the move from grade 8 to high school can be a bit intimidating. The good news is there is an amazing support team at LHSS who work together to help our students succeed. You’ll have a guidance counsellor and vice principal assigned to you by alpha last name. Students with IEPs can access support through Learning Services with a Special Education Resource Teacher. There are also additional support staff here to look out for you, including our child youth workers, social worker and student success teachers. Along with classroom teachers, coaches/staff sponsors, office and support staff, we’re here to make the transition to high school a positive one.
